South Dakota Service Dogs
Omar and Willow: Perfectly Imperfect Partners
For Omar
Omar's military journey began in 2004 as a Civil Engineer in the U.S. Air Force. What started as a single enlistment before a planned firefighting career in Southern California became a full 20-year commitment by his sixth year of service. His first combat experience came at Camp Liberty, Iraq, in 2008 with the 54th Engineer Brigade. Nothing truly prepared him for the realities of combat, and while they trained exhaustively for the work, mental health was left woefully unsecured.
Omar spent years across multiple overseas assignments attempting to bury dark experiences, but the internal pressures mounted until they became uncontrollable. Two separate command-directed orders to seek mental health care culminated in a critical intervention and a Pennington County hold at the Monument Behavioral Health Center. That crisis forced him to set pride aside and ask for help.
That path led him to South Dakota Service Dogs, where he was introduced to Willow — a partner who carried her own trust issues and fear. Thanks to the expertise and belief of Miranda and the team at SDSD, Willow has learned to navigate the world, allowing Omar to lower his constant guard. She is meticulously attuned to his anxiety, placing her paw on his foot when she senses his ticks, and has twice woken him from paralyzing nightmares. After one year and four months of training, they are perfectly imperfect together.
"I initially questioned why a "broken" veteran would be matched with a "broken" dog, but I quickly realized we were meant to share this time of healing."
